Sununu in trouble

In a hotly contested rematch of a Senate race six years ago Republican incumbent John Sununu trails former Governor Jeanne Shaheen by six points in the latest Rasmussen survey. From Rasmussen:

Democrat Jeanne Shaheen continues to hold a steady lead over incumbent John Sununu in New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate race. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds the challenger leading 52% to 46%.

Earlier in the month, Shaheen held a five-point advantage and she has been on top in nine of ten polls conducted this year. This is just the second time that Sununu has received more than 45% support all year. Any incumbent who polls below 50% is considered vulnerable.

The Democratic march towards sixty Senate seats continues, and this is a key race for both parties. With Obama poised to win N.H. Sununu has been put in the unenviable position of having to carry both Bush and McCain on his back. He is begining to show that strain. My prediction: Shaheen by five.

The Electoral Map Revisited

I have revised my electoral map over at the Washington Post, and attach it here so you may all ridicule it when it turns out to be wrong. I have Obama at 353, and McCain at 185. Some of the difficult calls were giving North Carolina to Obama, and giving Missouri to McCain. That very well may be flipped, or possibly McCain wins both. Obviously the Obama surge has turned blue to red, with Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Ohio, and the critical states of Virginia and Florida poised to switch to the Democrats. Does not look to healthy for McCain at this point.

Is it the Al Franken Decade?

There is nothing that gets conservative juices flowing like a post on Al Franken. Despite trailing Senator Norm Coleman from the begining Franken has now edged ahead in a recent University of Wisconsin poll. From the Post:

Just weeks ago, Coleman appeared to be headed for victory, one of a handful of Republicans expected to win in a tough year for the GOP. But then a bad economy turned grim, the public’s faith in Congress cratered, and support for Franken started to grow. The latest poll, a University of Wisconsin survey that came out Thursday, showed Franken ahead of Coleman 40 percent to 34 percent, his biggest lead of the race. Independent Dean Barkley was favored by 15 percent of those surveyed.

With the race tightening and the Democrats now having a realistic chance of hitting sixty votes in the Senate the alarm bells are going off in G.O.P. land. The United States Chamber of Commerce has moved aggressively on this race, pouring in millions to stop Franken. From the Post:

Officials at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, fearful of a union-friendly Democratic Senate, have dubbed the race “ground zero” in the effort to stop a 60-seat majority. The chamber and its affiliates have spent more than $3 million on ads designed to scare voters about Franken and Democrats, according to sources on both sides.

Norm Coleman’s lead has evaporated along with the Bush Presidency and the McCain candidacy, as he battles tailwinds that are destroying the Republicans nationwide.

But Coleman is struggling to get that message through the anti-Republican mood among Minnesota voters, particularly since the financial markets collapsed and he supported the $700 billion rescue plan. Franken was opposed to the bailout and rails against it on the stump.

In conservative Glencoe, the type of town where Republicans need to do well to offset Democratic strength in cities, Coleman faced heated questions about the bailout. “If I lose this race, it’s because of the American economy and voting for a rescue package,” he said afterward.

At several stops Monday, Coleman did not mention his party’s presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain. A poll this week showed McCain trailing Sen. Barack Obama by almost 20 points in Minnesota. And the only sign of President Bush was a Franken staffer wearing a Bush mask outside a Coleman event in Redwood Falls in southwestern Minnesota, an ever-present attempt by the Democrat’s campaign to remind voters of Coleman’s once-close ties to the White House.

Naturally the money invested here is buying ads, and they are getting tough. Here posted is the latest exchange between Coleman and Franken. Could the first decade in the new century actually be “the Al Franken decade”? For conservatives this thought may be even worse than the idea of eight years of the Obama Administration.

A different shade of red: Battleground Indiana

A fight in Indiana? Most of the early October polls showed McCain leading here by comfortable margins, but he is now showing some real slippage. A recent poll by Public Policy shows Obama inching ahead slightly, with a 48-46 lead over McCain. From Public Policy:

Barack Obama is holding a slight lead on John McCain in Indiana, 48-46, according to the newest survey from Public Policy Polling. Obama’s lead in the state is being fueled largely by voter concern about the economy. 60% of respondents list it as their biggest issue when deciding who to vote for this fall, and the Democrat has a 59-34 lead with that segment of the electorate. Obama is also benefiting from strong support with independent voters, among whom he leads 49-39. His 89-11 lead with black voters is just enough to offset the 51-42 advantage John McCain has with whites.“Barack Obama has a real chance to pull off a Midwestern sweep,” said Dean Debnam,President of Public Policy Polling. “Indiana and Missouri are the two toughest wins for him there but we’ve found him with a two point lead in each of those states over the last week. If Obama can hold on to enough white voters in those places his overwhelming black support will put him over the top.”

McCain must see some slippage in his internal polling, as he has dispatched Sarah Palin to Indiana to shore up the state. I would guess this may be the latest public appearance by a Republican in Indiana in modern times. Obama’s massive financial edge is also having an impact, as it is everywhere. Attached is an Indiana radio spot cut for Obama by John Mellencamp. I believe McCain may hold on in Indiana, but he is forced to fight in all the wrong places.

McCain Evaluates the Bush Administration

Senator John McCain, seeing his hopes fade away, has tried to move away from President Bush as quickly as he can, even issuing his own critique of the Bush Administration. From MSNBC and from John McCain:

In an interview Thursday with The Washington Times, McCain spoke of Bush in tones bordering on contempt, ticking off a litany of what he said were the president’s failures.

“Spending, the conduct of the war in Iraq for years, growth in the size of government — larger than any time since the Great Society, laying a $10 trillion debt on future generations of America — owing $500 billion to China, obviously, failure to both enforce and modernize the [financial] regulatory agencies that were designed for the 1930s and certainly not for the 21st century, failure to address the issue of climate change seriously,” McCain told the newspaper.

“We just let things get completely out of hand,” he said of the past eight years of Republican rule.

Friday, McCain extended the theme in an address at a campaign rally in Denver.

“We cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight: hoping for our luck to change at home and abroad,” he said. “We have to act. We need a new direction, and we have to fight for it.”

McCain’s comments seem very close to some of the blog postings here on this site that criticized President Bush, and that had strong rebuttals from some who now strongly support, strangely enough, John McCain. And the Democratic ticket jumped on McCain for his attempt to get away from President Bush, with Joe Biden mocking the attempt.

“John McCain is now attacking the Bush budget and Bush fiscal policies, which he voted for, I might add,” Biden said at a rally in Charleston, W.Va. “Folks, this is as crazy as, you know, Butch Cassidy attacking the Sundance Kid. I mean, that’s a team.”

Yes McCain and Bush have morphed into McBush, and McCain knows what the result will be because of it. But I would like to hear from the conservatives out there. Is the McCain criticism of Bush valid?

Big Red endorses Obama

Former Massachusetts Republican Governor Bill Weld has endorsed Barack Obama for President. Weld is another prominent Republican to change sides, joining Colin Powell and former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson in jumping on the runaway Barack Obama freight train. From the Globe:

Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president on Friday, citing the senator’s good judgment, “deep sense of calm” and “first-class political temperament.”

Weld said he’s never endorsed a Democrat for president before, but in the last six weeks or so, it became “close to a no-brainer.” Obama has a history of bringing Democrats, Republicans and independents together and is the best choice at a time when America’s standing in the world is at a low point, he said.

“It’s not often you get a guy with his combination of qualities, chief among which I would say is the deep sense of calm he displays, and I think that’s a product of his equally deep intelligence,” he said in a phone interview.

Weld had been kicked around by Jesse Helms and the Republican Party when he was nominated by Bill Clinton to be ambassador to Mexico. He had endorsed Mitt Romney in the Republican primary season. And Weld had been treated pretty shabbily by Republicans when he contemplated a run for Governor of New York. I guess if they don’t want Bill Weld we are happy to have him come on over to the Democratic side!

Allison Hajjar is “The Wall”

Alllison Hajjar

Proud dad Jim Hajjar sent me a link to a great story about his daughter Allison Hajjar, having a fabulous year as the goalie for Methuen’s High School Field Hockey team. Allison has eight shutouts, including six in a row, and was recently featured in a great story in the Eagle Tribune. From the Tribune:

Beating the Methuen field hockey team this year has been no easy task, which may surprise some people since the Rangers returned only two starters.

The big reason why has been senior goalie Allison Hajjar.

Hajjar has exploded onto the scene, recording an impressive eight shutouts including a string of six in a row as she has led the “rebuilding” Rangers to a 10-3-3 record.

Even more amazing is the fact that this season marks Hajjar’s first full season as the Rangers’ starting goalie.

When Hajjar first picked up a field hockey stick as a freshman, the novice was placed in the field. But early into the season, a change was needed.

“I only played the field at first but we needed a goalie so I decided to try something different and take a risk,” said Hajjar. “It looked fun sitting in that goal so I figured I would just try it out. After I switched, that goal has just felt like my home, I’ve loved it ever since.”

Coming into this season, Hajjar was finally handed the reins after spending most of her sophomore and junior years as the junior varsity goalie and backup on the varsity squad.

“I actually thought [goalie] could be a weakness for us this year,” said coach Karen McLaughlin. “She just didn’t have the experience because she’s been in everybody’s shadow as the backup over the last two years.”

However, any questions have been completely wiped off the board as Hajjar has become one of the top goalies in the league. Hajjar started the year with a shutout of Lawrence and recorded her second shutout two games later in a 2-0 win over Haverhill.

Hajjar then recorded double-digit saves against Andover (15), Chelmsford (12), Tewksbury (11) in a tough three-game stretch against the iron of the MVC. The Rangers went 1-1-1 and the tone was set for the rest of the season.

Starting with a 1-0, six-save win over Malden on Sept. 24, Hajjar recorded six straight games without letting in a single goal as Methuen went 5-0-1 in that span, bringing her season total to eight shutouts.

In 16 games this season, Hajjar has only allowed 18 goals while recording 117 saves for a 1.12 goals-against-average and an .867 save percentage.

Congratulations to Allison and coach Karen McLaughlin, as well as the entire team for having an outstanding year. Read the Eagle Tribune article here.
