Central Labor at St Ann’s Home

The Central Labor Council of the Merrimack Valley has agreed to donate painting services to the expansion of the St Ann’s Home in Methuen. This expansion and renovation was aided by a waiver of 50 percent of the building fees associated with this project by the City of Methuen. I was happy to make such a recommendation to Methuen’s City Council. I would like to thank Tom Casey of the Painters Union and Central Labor for his dedication to community and to the men and women of the union, who were on hand Saturday to work. The groundbreaking was some months ago, and I have included a photo from that event as well. I have been endorsed in this race by the Central Labor Council.

Eagle Tribune endorses Manzi for Mayor

The Eagle Tribune today endorsed me, Bill Manzi for Mayor of Methuen. The endorsement, which discussed the Police Department as well as other issues, cited the willingness to make tough decisions as well as some of our accomplishments. From the Tribune:

In the mayoral race, incumbent Mayor William Manzi has shown his willingness to make the tough decisions needed to restore order and good leadership to the Police Department. For that reason and for his other accomplishments, we urge voters to re-elect Mayor Manzi.

I am proud to have this endorsement, and believe it accurately reflects some of the real differences between the candidates. I will do a further post on those differences shortly. Read the Tibune article at this link.

Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union Grand Opening

The grand opening of the Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union occurred today, and I was pleased to be there to welcome Lowell Mayor (and fellow CCHS Alum)Bill Martin and the Jeanne D’Arc staff to Merrimack Street in Methuen. The offices, located in the new office condominiums on Merrimack Street, are part of a strong Economic Development effort. My thanks to Karen Sawyer, our Economic Development Director, and the fine folks from Jeanne D’Arc, including my Woodburn Drive neighbor P. Scott Flagg.

Grand Opening Mann’s Orchard

I was on hand for the Grand (re) Opening of the brand new Mann’s Orchard farm stand. This Methuen icon, relocated as part of the process that brought Methuen a new Target, is bigger and better than ever. Sitting across from the Loop, this destination point for so many is a proud achievement of the Fitzgerald Family and a testament to the great advances we have made in the area of Economic Development. Visit the farm stand for the very best in pies and fresh produce. Good luck to Bill, Kathy, and the family.

Nevins Family of Services

I was honored to be the keynote speaker at the Friends of the Nevins Family of Services annual dinner. From the Nursing and Rehab Center, to the Adult Day Health Center to the state of the art Alzheimer’s Family Care Center, the web of human services that Nevins provides is second to none. The facility is also home to an residential wing that was saved from the potential for demolition by a HUD 202 Grant. It is an important part of our historic heritage, and provides Methuen and the Merrimack Valley with the finest of care. I am pictured with Billy Pittochelli, Director of Admissions, and Felix Albano, President and CEO. I have family at this facility, and from a personal point of view I cannot say enough about the care they provide. My CCHS classmate from 1974, Brian Sheehy, founded the Friends with Bill Pittochelli, and they delivered a ten thousand dollar check to the Nevins Family of Services that night.

The Huggy Bears

huggyDuring the course of my first campaign for Mayor I had the pleasure of having a coffee hour at the Merrimack Valley Apartments on Calumet Road. During the course of that coffee hour I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of several ladies who had undertaken an enterprise that they referred to as the Huggy Bear project. It was a club of ladies devoted to sewing from scratch beautiful teddy bears that they then donated to hospitals and to charities involving children. But these ladies had a problem. The one sewing machine they had was old and ready to fail. They needed a new machine but had no funding for one. Upon hearing of their problem I called upon Senator Steve Baddour, then City Councilor (and now State Rep.) Linda Dean Campbell and the three of us approached the Methuen Wal-Mart for assistance. In no time at all Wal-Mart donated two new machines to the Huggy Bear ladies, as well as $500 in credits towards the purchase of supplies for their efforts. Since then they have continued to sew and donate their beautiful work to so many different charities. I recently visited Merrimack Valley Apartments for another coffee, and saw my friends again. If you are interested in having them sew you some beautiful teddy bears please email me or call me at 978-983-8505. Keep up the good work ladies.

Pelham Street Interchange Improvements

I was pleased to host Massachusetts Highway Commissioner Luisa M. Paiewonsky as she visited Methuen to inspect the new access lane added at the Pelham Street Cross Street Route 93 Interchange. This lane was added to allow direct access to Rte 93 via a right hand turn lane, and it has already considerably improved the bottlenecks that were occurring at this location. Mass Highway added this project to the Rte 93 resurfacing project that was already underway. State Senator Steve Baddour and Representative Linda Campbell were on hand to join the Commissioner, and they both played a large role in getting Mass Highway involved in this project. We were able to partner with our State delegation, Mass Highway and the developer of the Irving site in this area to produce this great result. This partnership involved the City donating the house on the corner, Irving paying for the design, and Mass Highway paying for the construction. With some substantial economic development coming this was a project that was absolutely necessary. I thank Commissioner Paiewonsky and Linda and Steve for being so strong on this issue.

ELT Defeated in Methuen

The possibility of Methuen accepting a one year grant to implement the State ELT (Expanded Learning Time) program was defeated tonight by the Methuen School Committee. The Committee vote was unanimous. This process began in Methuen when the School Committee voted to accept a ten thousand dollar state grant to study the possibility of bringing ELT to Methuen. As that grant driven process began both the Superintendent, Dr. Jeanne Whitten, and the School Committee pledged that such a program would not be implemented without community and committee consensus. Such consensus was not able to be built around this issue. My own vote against ELT was driven by the inability to reconcile the necessary school reassignments that the program would have mandated. Under this voluntary program not all of Methuen’s four K-8 schools would have participated, forcing us to designate two “ELT Schools” with the attendant student reshuffling that would have occurred upon program adoption. The unrest this potential had created in our community simply outweighed, in my opinion, the benefits of the program. Having made that point I must concede that the program does have many positives, and could have benefited some section of our student population. As the State of Massachusetts looks at this program they need to consider the problems that led Methuen to turn down ELT. I feel that Superintendent Whitten kept her word, and ran a strong and open process that truly took into account the strongly held views of the parents. Is there any view on ELT that you would like to share? Did the Committee do the right thing, and is there any redeeming value to ELT? Does anyone think that the Commonwealth may move towards mandatory ELT?

Grand Opening New Tokyo

I was able to cut the ribbon at the New Tokyo Restaurant in the area of the Loop in Methuen. The restaurant is another good piece of economic news for Methuen. The Loop area boasts some outstanding restaurants, and New Tokyo certainly will be a good addition. Try it out, and be sure to visit The Loop in Methuen for all of your shopping needs.
