Father John McLaughlin Takes New Position

Father John

Methuen lost a very good man and an outstanding priest when Father John McLaughlin of St Monicas’s Parish in Methuen was assigned to be the first national vocations director at the Archdiocese of the Military in Washington D.C. Father John left about a month ago, and the Parish and the City will miss him dearly. I am late getting this posting up, but the outpouring for him at the going away party was reflective of the esteem he was held in by our community. I miss him already, although he tweeked me on a regular basis over my support for the Democratic Party. Thank you for your great work for our community Father John.

Forest Lake Temporarily Closed

A high bacteria count yesterday forced the City to order the closure of Forest Lake for the day. We monitor that count daily, and post those results on the city website at www.cityofmethuen.net. Please check that website for information about the status of the lake re-opening. Read the Tribune story here.

The body of Sgt. Alex Jimenez Found

The body of Lawrence soldier Alex Jimenez, who has been M.I.A. in Iraq for fourteen months, was found and identified yesterday. Sgt Jimenez had been seized by the enemy after a firefight, and his family always held out hope that he was alive in Iraq. Yesterdays news was a blow to the family, and the entire Merrimack Valley. The body of Pvt. Byron Fouty of Michigan, who was taken in the same action, was also found. I had the privelege of meeting Andy Jimenez, Alex’s father, at a Veterans celebration in Methuen last year, as well as Pvt Fouty’s dad, and the City of Methuen offers our condolences to both families. …While Gramm wins an ambassadorship

Former Senator Phil Gramm of Texas, a co-chair of the McCain Campaign and a top economic advisor to that campaign, created a stir yesterday by saying that the United States was a “nation of whiners” that were in a “mental recession”, McCain could not distance himself quickly enough from the Gramm remarks. From MSNBC:

“I strongly disagree” with Phil Gramm’s remarks, McCain told reporters in what amounted to nothing short of a smackdown against one of his top surrogates and longtime friends. “Phil Gramm does not speak for me. I speak for me.”

McCain also held out a future role for Gramm in a McCain Administration as ambassador to Belarus.

Obama did not waste much time going on the offensive:

“It’s not just a figment of your imagination,” Obama said at a town-hall event focused on helping women advance economically. “Let’s be clear. This economic downturn is not in your head.” “It isn’t whining to ask government to step in and give families some relief,” he said, drawing a standing ovation from the nearly 3,000 people in a high school gymnasium. “And I think it’s time we had a president who doesn’t deny our problems or blame the American people for them but takes responsibility and provides the leadership to solve them.”

And so in one day we have both candidates having supporters trip up in outside remarks, but the day, in my opinion, goes strongly towards Obama. And Phil Gramm gets a one way ticket to Minsk.

Jesse Jackson wields scapel…

The Reverend Jesse Jackson, in comments inadvertently picked up by a live mic, made disparaging remarks about Barack Obama and has spent today doing the “profusely apologize” routine. Jackson’s comments were spurred by his perception that Obama is somewhat condescending in his remarks, and has not focused on issues of import to the black community. From MSNBC:

During a break from taping “Fox & Friends” on Sunday, a fellow guest asked Jackson about speeches on morality Obama has given at black churches. Jackson said at a news conference Wednesday that he responded that Obama’s speeches can come off as speaking down to black people and that there were other important issues to be addressed, such as unemployment, the mortgage crisis and the number of blacks in prison.

The Reverend Jackson took some of his heaviest incoming fire from his son, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.

His divisive and demeaning comments about the presumptive Democratic nominee — and I believe the next president of the United States — contradict his inspiring and courageous career,” the younger Jackson said.

The younger Jackson serves as a national co-chair of the Obama campaign. Well, with all of the controversy surrounding these comments did Rev. Jackson actually do Senator Obama a favor here? With Obama tacking center this cannot help but re-inforce the mainstreaming of Barack Obama. What do you think? I see it as a blessing in disguise for Obama. Keep that cutting instrument in your pocket Reverend Jackson.

Kerry Visits The Merrimack Valley

Meggy

John Kerry visited both Lowell and Lawrence this week, campaigning hard in both cities. Kerry visited the Cedar Crest Restaurant in Lawrence to talk to a group and take questions. Senator Kerry talked about national health care, CDBG funding, veterans services, and a host of other important issues. The Senator seemed energized and ready to talk serious issues. A good day for Kerry, as he got some good media coverage of the event. I have endorsed John Kerry in this race. The redheaded rose between two thorns is rising political star Meaghan Manzi.

Massachusetts House Backs Popular Vote Bill

The Mass House of Representatives voted 119-36 to back a bill that would commit Massachusetts electors to cast their ballots for the Presidential candidate that won the most popular votes. This legislation would only take effect if enough other states joined this effort to reach the electoral college majority of 270 votes. The bill, an undisguised effort to subvert the electoral college, would have required Massachusetts electors in the last Presidential election to cast their ballots for George W. Bush despite John Kerry winning this state. An interesting concept that not only tries to get around the electoral college system, but also tries to get around the constitutional amendment process. Certainly the spectre of the Gore debacle of 2000 must weigh heavily on the minds of legislators, but I question whether this approach can work or should work. I believe that local Rep. Linda Campbell voted against this proposal. Governor Patrick has not said whether he would sign the bill if it reaches his desk.

High School Building Committee Formed

Campbell

I have recently announced the formation of a High School Building Committee and named teacher and engineer Suzanne Lamoureux to head this critical City effort. I have attached the names of the Building Committee, and once again express my thanks to State Representative Linda Dean Campbell for her outstanding efforts in securing the Massachusetts School Building Authority acceptance of our High School project, one of three such approvals in Massachusetts. My thanks as well to State Senator Steve Baddour, who was instrumental in getting Methuen this approval, as well as Rep. Barbara L’Italien, who has been a true friend to Methuen. We are blessed with an outstanding delegation that works closely together to produce real results for Methuen. The building committee will soon have a web page that will detail meeting schedules and other relevant information.

Senator Kennedy Returns to Washington

Senator Ted Kennedy returned to Capitol Hill today to cast a vote on an important Medicare Bill. The Boston Globe reported that Kennedy flew to Washington immediately after receiving treatment in Boston, and then flew home right after the vote. A brief return, but one that came while Kennedy is leading conversations amongst key people in Washington about the shape of health care reform after January. Ted Kennedy, even in adversity, continues to work for the American people. Thank you, Ted Kennedy!

Beas’s Lot Money is Accepted

The City Council last night voted to accept a $250,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to create a park and a boat ramp at the site of the old Beas’s restaurant. The vote was 6-2, with Councilors Pappalardo and Cronin voting no. This money will allow us to move forward and complete design and then go to bid for construction. Although there has been some dissent on the concept of a boat ramp here this is a unique opportunity to take a gateway to Methuen and beautify it and create some recreational access to the Merrimack River. My appreciation and thanks to Rep. Linda Dean Campbell, who has been a major force in our negotiations with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts over this project, and Senator Steve Baddour. Thanks also to City Councilor Deborah Quinn, who has chaired the group I established to manage this project from the point in time when we received the grant. As we prepare to bid the construction phase I will keep posting information on the progress we are making.
