A look at Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Leadership: In Turbulent Times”

Leadership: In Turbulent TimesLeadership: In Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Doris Kearns Goodwin looks at four American Presidents that she has written about in past works: Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson. She gives us a unique perspective, offering us a view of each with an eye towards the strong leadership abilities of each man. How are great leaders developed, what personality traits offer us a hint of the potential for strong leadership, are people molded into leaders or do they innately possess leadership skills? Goodwin takes a look at these four individuals in a new way, devoting chapters to their early lives, with some of the setbacks and defeats suffered by each. She then takers us on a spectacular trip through some of the most challenging problems in American history, and how each man provided the vital leadership the country needed to succeed in overcoming adversity.

I read the amazing “Team of Rivals” by the author but still feel that I have missed much of the scholarship on Lincoln. This book gives us such a good flavor for his determination, his willingness to work without stop to realize his ambition, and how he lead when strong leadership was required to save the country. For me the Lincoln sections brought the most value, but each reader will have their own preferences. Lincoln the President, and the person, is a fascinating study. A truly extraordinary man, and certainly at the very top of any list of greatest presidencies.

The author gives us a great look at what she defines as “transformational leadership,” “crisis management,” “turnaround leadership” and “visionary leadership,” with each President taking one. I appreciated how Goodwin laid out this book, moving from President to President and truly giving us some insight into their personal characteristics, including the ones that were not so good. She tied them all together brilliantly. If you want to learn something about each one of these Presidents and how they provided leadership at key times in American history this book comes highly recommended.

Seabrook Police Announcement on Major Drug Arrest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, February 28, 2019

Seabrook Police Department

Drug Arrest Nets More Than 50 Grams Crack & Gun

On Wednesday February 28, 2019 Seabrook Police arrested 49-year-old Craig Noyes of Seabrook on charges of Possession of a Controlled Drug (x2) and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Drug. The charges were the result of an early evening traffic stop on Route 286 during which more than 50 grams of crack cocaine, quantities of heroin/fentanyl, prescriptions, and a semi-automatic handgun were seized. The crack cocaine had a street value of more than $5,000.00.

Noyes will be arraigned at the Rockingham County Superior Court on March 8th.

Seabrook Acting Chief of Police Brett Walker stated, “This arrest highlights the importance of interagency cooperation. Seabrook Police worked with the Salisbury, MA Police and the Massachusetts State Police in a combined effort to take a dealer off the streets. This is a significant seizure and the presence of a firearm reaffirms the dangers presented to officers at every level of the illicit drug trade. We are extremely pleased by the work of our officers in both getting drugs and a gun off the streets as well as their ability to get it done without injury to Mr. Noyes or the officers.”

Prior to the incident, officers observed several local residents congregating at a home which has generated complaints of suspected drug activity to the Seabrook Police. These residents waited in the sub-freezing temperatures and officers believed they were awaiting Mr. Noyes’ arrival. Following the traffic stop, several vehicles and residents approached officers asking if Mr. Noyes was in the vehicle and whether or not he needed a ride.

Seabrook Sergeants Dan Lawrence and Justin Murphy, Detective Mike Maloney, and Officers Eddie Tyre and Rick Hines, and Salisbury, MA Police Officer Jeremy Kelley were involved in this arrest.

Anyone with additional information on this case please contact Detective Sergeant Dan Lawrence or Sergeant Justin Murphy at the Seabrook Police Department 603-474-5200. Anyone wishing to provide information on illegal activities can report the information to the Seabrook Police Department at 603-474-5200 or through the Crimeline for the Hamptons via text to “CRIMES” (274637) keyword: “Hamptons”. http://www.hamptonpd.com/crime/crimeline.htm.

The Seabrook Water and Sewer Reports for 2018

The annual reports provided to the Board of Selectmen on the activity of the Water Department and the Sewer Department are attached below. These reports are compiled to examine the volumes in each department, as well as the overall financial impacts of each department on the overall municipal budget. In FY 2018 the overall level of taxpayer subsidy to both departments in combination was relatively stable, but increased in wastewater. The Board of Selectmen have adjusted water and sewer rates in FY 2019 in order to eliminate this taxpayer subsidy. Next years report should see the combined “subsidy” eliminated, or being very close to elimination. The taxpayer subsidy in 2018, on an operations only basis, was over $2 million.

Mayor Jajuga State of the City 2019

Mayor James P. Jajuga offered his second State of the City Address on February 20, 2019 at the Methuen Senior Activity Center. Due to my advanced age I missed the first 30 seconds or so of the Mayor’s speech.

Eagle Tribune coverage of the speech.
