Katherine Lavigne named permanent Chief of Police

I will on Friday send up to the City Council the name of Katherine Lavigne to be the new permanent Chief of the Methuen Police Department. Chief Lavigne has been the acting Chief for close to a year, and in a unique and difficult situation has truly done an outstanding job. Additionally I will send to City Council the names of Thomas Fram to be Executive Captain, Gregory Gallant as Lieutenant, and Kenneth Leone as Sargent. Chief Lavigne will be Methuen’s first female Police Chief and one of a very few in the Commonwealth. With all of the issues that have been raised there were many who felt that we should go outside the Department for new leadership. I myself felt that a strong outside presence might be necessary. The new leadership of this Department showed that they can do the job from day one, and Chief Lavigne and her team, presented with an opportunity through the temporary period, have proven that day after day. My congratulations to Chief Lavigne, Captain Fram, and the entire Department.

Kathy Lavingne is an excellent pick for Chief. Here in the west end we have never seen so much police presence. She has truly put the needs of the citizens first.

How can you justify putting someone like that in charge of the MPD? Her background is tainted and she and some of her captains are not enforcing laws here in methuen. She said this 10yrs ago — http://web.archive.org/web/20030527222312/www.eagletribune.com/news/stories/19981112/LN_005.htm
and the problem remains in the same neighborhood. Apparently those doing this have some very good friends on the MPD. When someone does finally get hurt because of this stuff I am sure there are going to be plenty of lawsuits going around. Some are actually considering lawsuits against the dept for not enforcing what is going on.

She has done a good job with this department. Nobody has contacted my office about the problem that you have posted about. Attacking her and accusing her of being “tainted” is not a productive problem solving technique. Give my office a call and we can see if there is a way to help solve the dirtbiking problem in your neighborhood.
