With multiple disclosures on Alaska Governor Sarah Palin the McCain campaigns vetting process is now being called into question. The New York Times today highlights the fact that McCain may have rushed to name Palin before a full vetting process could be undertaken. The Times reports that the McCain team has people in Alaska now looking into the Palin background. A little late for that! The disclosures do not seem to have put Palin in a position of losing the slot, but they have definitely put the campaign in a defensive posture. From the Times:
On Monday morning, Ms. Palin and her husband, Todd, issued a statement saying that their 17-year-old unmarried daughter, Bristol, was five months pregnant and that she intended to marry the father.
Among other less attention-grabbing news of the day: it was learned that Ms. Palin now has a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner; that she was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party, which has at times sought a vote on whether the state should secede; and that Mr. Palin was arrested 22 years ago on a drunken-driving charge.
The rushed nature of McCains choice seems to have flowed from his desire to name either Lieberman or Ridge to the ticket. Such a choice would have enraged social conservatives, and the trial baloon sent up by the McCain campaign was riddled with social conservative outrage.
Up until midweek last week, some 48 to 72 hours before Mr. McCain introduced Ms. Palin at a Friday rally in Dayton, Ohio, Mr. McCain was still holding out the hope that he could choose a good friend, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, a Republican close to the campaign said. Mr. McCain had also been interested in another favorite, former Gov. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania.
But both men favor abortion rights, anathema to the Christian conservatives who make up a crucial base of the Republican Party. As word leaked out that Mr. McCain was seriously considering the men, the campaign was bombarded by outrage from influential conservatives who predicted an explosive floor fight at the convention and vowed rejection of Mr. Ridge or Mr. Lieberman by the delegates.
Perhaps more important, several Republicans said, Mr. McCain was getting advice that if he did not do something to shake up the race, his campaign would be stuck on a potentially losing trajectory.
McCain knew it was a gamble, and although it is to soon to tell how it will work out the early reviews are not promising. Read the New York Times article here.

With all due respect that is a ridiculous comparision. Obama was selected by the voters, and whether you like him as a candidate or not has nothing to do with vetting. The post and the Times story are legitimate, and many Republicans are expressing some reservations about the process used in making the selection. The selection, as I have written, may in fact turn out to be a political plus for McCain. But how he made this selection may tell us some things about how he manages.
And Jules it is certainly been an issue for Democrats in the past. When it was revealed that Senator Thomas Eagleton had received electric shock treatment after he was named VP by Democratic nominee George McGovern many said that the McGovern vetting process had failed. Do you agree with that? Yes the vetting process is fair game.

Again, I would agree that her daughters pregnancy is wholly irrelevant. An old OUI by her hubby is also not relevant, and not worthy of discussion. Her membership in a party advocating secession from the United States? Yes that is relevant. Did the McCain vetting process know about the Alaska Independence Party issue? Did they even know about the other issues and understand that they were going to come out, and whether there would be impact on McCains candidacy? You see it is a legitimate political question, just like prior candidates have had to explain the vetting process. When people said (on both sides of the aisle) that the selection entailed risk and possibly reward, this is what they meant by risk.
