Senator Barack Obama, in a nod to some political realities, agreed that where a good energy compromise bill could be negotiated he could support some additional offshore drilling. From the New York Times:
“If we come up with a genuine bipartisan compromise, where I have to accept some things that I don’t like in order to get energy independence, that’s something I will have to consider,” Mr. Obama said
Still, he cautioned that he is not yet “ready to sign off on any approach.”
Faced with a barrage of negative ads from John McCain blaming off shore drilling prohibitions for the price of gas Obama and the Democrats have been in full retreat, with growing majorities in both houses of Congress seemingly ready to modify these past prohibitions. And with Congress having left without any action on energy their is rightful criticism by the public on this lack of action. Obama is correct here. If the Democrats can get some real positives from an energy bill that is not perfect then it should be explored, even if it means some additional drilling. Obama, contrary to the political attacks launched on him, has shown again a very pragmatic side. Will he take criticism from the left for that pragmatism? Good call, and especially if a compromise bill emerges.
So is shifting what Obama means by CHANGE? “…Obama, in a nod to…political realities…” no, Obama is waking up to those realities! “Shifts (slightly),what a delicate way to put it, so very politic of you. Isn’t “shifting slightly” something like a three-quarter FLIP-FLOP?

I guess he must have learned that flopping technique from McCain, who has been against drilling offshore and in Alaska until he flopped a couple of weeks back.

Your Honor,
For the sake of the country’s economic health this is welcome news.
This is your second embarrassing entry (see debate entry).
I would like to correct a observation (spin) you made.
“And with Congress having left without any action on energy their is rightful criticism by the public on this lack of action.”
You should substitute Democrats for Congress. Republians stayed and debated in face of the lights, microphone and cameras being shut down. A Democratic class act. Democrats are not democratic.
One reason, the media reports, the Democrats left this problem on hold and went on vacation, was to prevent Obama from having to vote against the “Drill Now” bill. I can imagine the back room meeting that brought Obama to his “pragmatic” (Democrat for we flip flopp) change in position.
The Republicans stayed to call attention to the importance of the problem. Each house now has a bipartisan group each of whom has their own compromise plan. They too have been ignored by the Democratic party.
Now I guess eventually the Democrats will work on a compromise bill and then pound their collective chests declaring how they save the economy even though results will not be seen for a while. (price drop from speculation may occur immediately as future oil supplies will be increased.
Of course, the democratic war on business will continue as Obama pushes his $1,000 per person rebate largely financed by taxing “big oil”. Actually, we will pay.
Remember, the “man in the street pays for everything”.
McCain flipped first as he heard from his constituents, just as he did on his support for Amnesty.
Obama comes late because he was prevented by the MoveOn.org, and dialy Kos gang along with the environmental lobby. Finally, I guess, the public outcry got through.
The Emperor has no cloths.

PS: Your Honor if the democrats finally vote on the “Drill Now” bill does that mean she has now endangered the environment, just as she took singular praise for saving it by blocking action?

Your Honor,
I believe you probably learned your flopping techniques from your close “friend” John “liveshot” Kerry. He certainly phrased it in memorable ways.
Have you noticed his profile appearing all over the district carrying cash handouts for all the locals. I think he running for re-election.
Another heroic Democrat who won’t accept a debate challenge.
In a few weeks he will return to his lair and we won’t hear from him for another six years.

Jules,
John Kerry has a history of being a good debater, and went head to head with Bill Weld in a large number of debates. I am not sure why he should debate his opponent, as he is going to win big. As a Mayor I can tell you that John Kerry has been very responsive to our needs at the local level, even in non-election years.
