The State Senate will today begin budget deliberations, and first up will be revenue amendments. It appears likely that the Senate will follow the House by passing an increase in the sales tax to 6.25% from 5%. It now appears likely that some local option meals taxes will be included as well. This menu of taxes will likely include a local option lodging tax, as well as a lifting of the exemption currently granted to Verizon on the property tax for telephone poles. Beverage alcohol will likely lose its sales tax exemption as well. I predict a failure to enact meaningful municipal health care reform.

Your Honor,
I agree with your assessment. After all it was a predicable outcome.
Someday you will have to tell me why you think Democrats are better than Republicans at managing the economy.
Another prediction; sales tax will go up. They will sneak in some conditions where the sales tax covers areas it never covered before. In spite of all this, when things get better the tax will not be rescinded. Now we will have a larger revenue stream again and the legislature will lard up the budget. The next recession all this will be repeated.
This has been going on for decades which is why we are suffering now.
Jules (remember reform before revenue…hah)

Your Honor,
I see our Governor is outa town. Maybe in Washington. Should be here twisting arms.
Do you think the Governor will save the day and Veto the tax increases because they have not met met his ‘reform before revenue’ promise?
There is that word ‘promise’ again.
Jules
