    Your Honor,

The President was inspirational, straight-forward, energetic and confident, as usual. Even the GOP was caught applauding and giving a standing ovation with the Dems.

Barack Obama will transcend the presidency simply because he tells it like it is and gives the solution with no noticeable effort. His matter-of-fact attitude is a blessing and something we haven’t heard in more than 40 years! Long live Obama.

If you were watching on MSNBC, they were carrying an audience approval line for both McCain and Obama voters. The speech seemed to resonate pretty well with both (except for the bit where he specifically called out the GOP for the mistakes of the past).

As long as we’re going to be in a depression, at least we can listen to someone who can inspire and turn a phrase.

    God help us.

A trillion for TARP. (including interest)

    A trillion for “Stimulus”.

Another trillion when the first stimulus fails.

    Billions for home mortgages.

From which totals is the President going to cut the budget in half. Is it before or after he is going to enact universal health care and his education concepts.

He will cut the military. That will help in the wars we fight.

Yeah, it gets ugly when you start adding things up. Don’t forget the 1T it’ll probably take to remove toxic debt from banks.

And though the President said that he would cut the “deficit” in half by end of term 1, that means we add even more to the debt Remember, we’ve only been in surplus and erasing debt briefly under Clinton …

I, for one, even though I believe in all 10 of the Bill of Rights, think that spending 54% (by the site you posted earlier) is a bit too much to be spending on “defense”. We’ve been pretty offensive in the past 30 or 40 years, and it’s time for our partners to shoulder more of this burden. Our go it alone strategy has left us bankrupt. Bring our troops home. Especially the ones left over from WWII in Japan and Germany, and from the 38th parallel in Korea. We need money to rebuild our economy first, not to prop up the rest of the world’s.

You know, there were a set of figures out of the speech that bothered me greatly over the last couple of days: that only a little over 50% of our youth get through high school, and that 50% of those that start college complete it.

I had NO idea that we are already this bad off. Are these figures close to correct? I tried to do a little research, and found that states are keeping two sets of books to certify under No Child Left Behind, so who knows what the reality is. But, if we as a population are this uneducated, where is the economic growth supposed to come from?

I think instead of pouring more money into weapons systems, we had better start pouring similar amounts of money into education, and pretty quickly.

    Fred,

The no child left behind, a Kennedy/Bush collabrative, won’t work. If Obama adds layers of federal government the system will degrade more.

Controls must come back to local control backed by a strong parental involvement.

    We are accelerating to socialism.

Not surprisingly, I respectfully disagree with half of what you say. 😉

I think to compete in a global economy, the last thing we need is local control and a school system funded by property taxes, thus ensuring a class stratified education. This is one place where involvement by the Feds is not only desirable, but should be required.

But you’re undeniably correct in that parents need to turn off the TV, put the video games away, and participate in their children’s education. And you’re right again, NCLB was a scam: Teddy K admits he was hoodwinked by the bipartisan reach across from Bush, who never intended to fund the program in the first place.

I had a stay at home mom when I was a little Fred: she not only taught me to read long before my first kindergarten class, but pushed and prodded me and my siblings all the way through.

I wonder how many parents today have that luxury after working longer and longer hours just to stay afloat.

Let the Pentagon hold a bake sale.
