Governor Patrick, in light of the Wilkerson scandal, calling for an overhaul of state ethics laws and demanding fast action within 30 days of the new legislative session. I take him seriously, and believe him to have the best intentions moving forward. Will the legislature agree? Aside from posts attacking the Governor in general what about the substance of what he has put forward? Is there substance? And who can be against ethics reform?

politically the term “reform” in politospeak that means “make it worse”.
Wilkerson has been around for a long time with her legal problems. That did not stop Governor “together we can” working for her re-election.
Now that she got caught with her hand in the cookie jar, Deval Patrick suddenly got religion. The goal; to save his own butt. After all he is a national figure.
Do you see any betting opportunities here, you honor?
My take; Nothing of substance will change.

The Wilkerson episode is a tragic story for her, the integrity of her collegues and the institution of the Senate.
The question being asked is whether her activites represent merely the actions of one individual or the culture of the Senate.
Knowing the members of that body, I believe that this is an anomoly. Certainly, I am confident that neither Senate President Murray, nor Sen Morrissey of Quincy were in any way involved and I firmly believe that this is not reflective of the culture of the Senate.
Unfortunately, it is more likely that the US Attorney’s office and the FBI will now more intensely investigate every whiff of suspect involvment whether innocent or not.Any whiff of conflict of interest,involvment in development activities or even advocacy for contributors will get extra scrutiny.
At a time when so much must be done this is an unfortunate situation. However, the taxpayers ought to know as a fact that their elected representatives are above suspicion and dedicated solely to their interests.

The question is not why my friend….lawyers created our system of government…that is not the question. The question is one of character and content. If a person is inclined to use their position to serve their own interests instead of those who elected them, that is where we run into problems.
