O’Reilly makes the ballot

Attorney Ed O’Reilly crossed the fifteen percent threshold at today’s Democratic convention, ensuring a September primary with John Kerry. (I have endorsed John Kerry in this race). The delegate count was 1994 to 580, giving O’Reilly about 23 percent. The Kerry campaign invested time and money here, and came away with a strong showing, but not strong enough to keep O’Reilly off of the ballot. Both campaigns will claim victory, with O’Reilly living to fight another day. Congratulations to both campaigns, and its on to September.

    Your Honor,

According to the newspapers, Kerry tried to persuade the delegates to keep O’Reilly off the ballot by force of his personal power.

Sounds like an underhanded power trip to me.

Is this fair for a party who puts so much truck in fairness and rights. Please explain.

I am an outsider from Ohio, but I congratulate the Massachusetts Democrats who helped get O’Reilly on the ballot. From what I gather, Ed’s platform is much more consistent with not only the MA Democratic Party’s platform; it is also more consistent with MA Dems in general.

In Ohio, many of us are working for real health care reform by pushing The Health Care for All Ohioans Act, a single payer solution to the health care crisis. Our Democratic governor, Ted Strickland is working with “stakeholders” to push a Massachusetts style plan with mandates, a solution (as you all probably know since your state has produced the template for the insurance company push in other states) that is no solution to the crisis. http://www.spanohio.org

I know Ed O’Reilly stands for single-payer, specifically Rep. John Conyers H.R. 676 which now has 90 cosponsors in the House. We need Ed to grab the Senate seat so he can sponsor a companion bill in the Senate and move real reform forward–with the insurance companies out of the equation.

Sen. John Kerry, though he initially voted against the war, has voted for every funding bill, I guess he was against the war before he was for it, so to speak. We Democrats everywhere need to push our Democratic representative and nominees on these tough issues and make them accountable to the electorate, the constituent/citizen needs that should come before the corporate needs and handouts.

Join PDA in the effort to transform the Democratic Party, a party that has shifted in lock-step to the right as the Republican Party has marched to the extreme Right. http://www.pdamerica.org We need to make the progressive agenda the center of the Democratic Party, since that is where most Dems are on the issues. Fair Trade, Out of Iraq Now, single payer health care, a serious investment in turning America into the powerhouse of Green energy in order to stop global warming, and fair elections, the last of which is best solved by paper ballots hand counted at the precinct level.

Onward Ed and MA Dems–get behind change and wake up the Party that has forgotten who it serves.

    Mike Carano

There is no truth to the speculation that the Kerry campaign made any attmept to keep Atty O’Reilly off the ballot. Sen Kerry had a crack whip team on the floor of the convention, including Methuen’s Linda Harvey who managed both Deval Patrick’s and NikiTsongas’s effective campaigns in Methuen.
The goal of the Kerry effort was to get over the 70% mark and that they did with 78%..winning a 4 to 1 victory.

Remarkable was the fact that Sen Baddour..who was with Kerry before he was against him and then the day before the convention was for him again was a NO SHOW at the convention where he was to whip his Senate District into line for?????….

    same for Rep Dempsey…

Mayors Manzi and Fiorentini were outstanding for the Kerry camp delivering a huge win for the Senator.

On a 90 degree day…the True Blues came through..and former Sen Pollard headed the delegation with Sen Baddour’s absent..has anyone seen former Sen Jajuga??? Are these guys back in the republican fold??? Everyone was asking!

    Your Honor,

I read Mike Carano’s “progressive” agenda above.

American individuality is disappearing and the “what can my country do for me crowd” is moving us to socialism, using Massachusetts as the model.

I hope the Republicans recover from their brain dead condition in time to reclaim freedom.

    Jules,

I am beginning to see your point of view.

Are you like some other local politicians.. a Republican in Democrat clothing.

The mainstream of the Democratic Party by the way is in favor of supporting small business, cutting property taxes and protecting the middle class and senior citizens.

Yes, Jules, real Democrats support unions because there must be some ability for workers who actually contribute to the creation of wealth and profit to negotiate and share in the value of their labor.

Real Democrats do not propose to take bread of the workers table, when their Dad worked to provide that same individual with the ability to attend college .

The Republicans and there fellow travelers in Democrat clothing, support big business and those fat cats who contribute huge sums to their campaigns.

    Follow the money.

What you should support is a law Jules that caps the amount of money a legislator can raise to no more than twice the salary of the position held or being sought.

And, unlike the Republicans , Democrats do invite numerous points of view and interests to actually join in the debate and formulation of policy.
