Mitt Romney, bowing to the inevitable after a less than stellar Super Tuesday showing, dropped from the presidential race today. If Romney were to have any viability after Tuesday a strictly two man race was needed between him and McCain. With Huckabee remaining in the race Romney correctly foresaw no plausible road to victory. With personal spending totaling 37.5 million dollars by the end of 2007 Romney put up a sizeable chunk of change, but his advantage in resources just did not translate into votes. From the Washington Post:
“I must now stand aside, for our party and our country,” Romney said. “If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win.”
“And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror,” he said.
Is Mitt Romney too perfect? (No flames on that question from the legions of Mitt haters) Why did the other Republicans in this race dislike him so much? The path to the Republican nomination is cleared for John McCain. Wonder how Rush Limbaugh feels this afternoon?
This is just my personal theory, but as a huge Mitt supporter, this is what I see.
McCain knows Mitt could have beat him. Why else would McCain be so supportive of Huckabee? (hmmm, where did I hear that?) Because he’s not afriad of him – this throws the support of the conservative right behind the one who is no threat to McCain.
Mitt is intelligent, charismatic, and had the funds. What he didn’t have was the backing of the republic party. Why? Because Mitt isn’t one of them. He is not a political insider. I think
I wish Mitt had presented himself as more of the businessman that he is. It seems the more he campaigned, he tried to sound like the other politicians.
My question is, who do I vote for now? A democrat or a democrat in republican’s clothing?

Apparently Kurt Hayes, an Independent candidate for Congress, has switched to the Republican Party. He will likely challenge Congresswoman Tsongas for re-election later this year.

I read on the Politico that Romney will likely seek the Republican nomination again in 2012 should the Democratic nominee win in 2008.

Your Honor,
The teacherLady has a problem shared by a lot of us; how to vote in next election.
I agree that we have a RINO (Republican In Name Only) as our standard bearer. However, TeacherLady, keep in mind that most of the Republican legislators in the Northeast are of that stripe. The ladies from Maine, Susan Collins and Olympia Snow as well as Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania vote regularly with their liberal friends.
I value my voting rights too much to stay home, and I certainly will not vote for the Democrat whoever that may be.
I’ll vote for McCain and hope for the best. I will also let him know how I feel regularly.
It is more important that we keep Hillary or Barach out of office.
It will be a tough 4 years not matter who wins.
Chin up.

If Romney runs in 2012 will he spend another 40 million of his own money?

All right Jules! You are not marching off the cliff with Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh. As a Democrat I will work for the nominee of the Party, but I cannot bring myself to denigrate John McCain, who is a person of personal courage who gave much to his country through his military service and harsh imprisonment as a P.O.W. I do believe that the Teacher Lady has the politics right as far as the G.O.P. goes, with Romney essentially blocked out of the contest by Huckabee. I think she is also right about Mitt selling himself as something that he really is not. Mitt Romney is a business Republican, who in his heart of hearts is a moderate. I think his problem was that nobody really believed he was anything but that, and that hurt him enough to keep him from the early sweep in Iowa and New Hampshire that he needed to win. The Teacher Lady points out that Mitt is charismatic and intelligent. Did you deliberately leave out handsome?

Someone was saying on the news this afternoon that he will try to pull a Ronald Reagan (he lost to Ford in ’76, made a comeback as the conservative hero in 1980). It would be interesting, but I highly doubt that he’ll go forward with it. Remember, the last person to seek the White House from Massachusetts promised to run again after he lost…

Oh, Mr. Mayor, did I forget handsome? Beauty is only skin deep (although he may be downright gorgeous on the inside too…).
But I digress.
Jules, I’d like to proposed an alternative voting option. What if we vote democrat, let them mess up the country for a few years, and then maybe enough people will realize that they don’t want socialism in the U.S., almost guaranteeing a republican victory in 2012?
I don’t think our votes will matter; my guess is the democrats will take it either way.

I actually think that the general election campaign will be VERY civil. I can’t see McCain going negative on the first potential female or African American president out of fear of a major backlash. Also, McCain has worked with both Democrats. The same goes for the other side — does the first female or African American presidential nominee tarnish the historical significance of their candidacy by going negative? Plus, (as you wrote earlier) McCain has a very honorable record of military service, and I don’t think Hillary or Barack would want to get themselves stuck in that debate. Overall, it will certainly be a Democratic year (sorry, Jules). In the end, the Republican Party is the party of one of the worst and ineffective presidents in American history. With that going against him, McCain won’t come close.

According to the Washington Post, President Bush will essentially endorse Senator McCain:

Now that is funny. Will McCain as the nominee treat George W. Bush as akin to radioactive waste? Hopefully W. will be a frequent guest of Senator McCain on the campaign trail.

Now all we need McCain to do is ask Dick Cheney to be his running mate. I don’t believe there are any limits on the term of the Vice President. 🙂

Your Honor,
Some interesting strategies being promulagated.
1. TeacherLady want’s to help the Democrats win and rule the country, while we watch it slip further in Socialism. The Republicans come back and save the country.
I believe that’s just what would happen. The down side is that the government never gets smaller, even with a Republican in office. Remember, if Enron were a government department we would still have it.
Jim and the Mayor think that if Gearge Bush openly supports McCain it will be his political demise.
I will hold my nose and vote for McCain and watch the country sink into who knows what. At least he will kick some jehadist butt. Also, TeacherLady, there is alsways a chance McCain will have an apiphany and rule conservatively.
TeacherLady it’s going to be a conservative nightmare no matter who gets in.
Has any one received their Deval Patrick property tax cut yet? TeacherLady, did you?

DJ makes a very good (and also funny)point. Maybe the CPAC conservatives will be satisfied with Cheney as VP. If not Cheney how about Tom Delay? We only wish the best for the McCain candidacy.

Oh Your Honor,
You play with my feelings.
I’ll tell you what, how about Tom Delay for McCain’s VP and Mark Rich for Hillary Clinton’s.
We can then throw both the VP candidates into jail where they belong. Woops, forgot Bill pardoned Rich whiles he was on the run overseas.
The TeacherLady and I think this going to be interesting times.
Its going to one heck of a ride. Talk to you soon.

Ouch! That Mark Rich potential candidacy really smarts. But it does bring to mind another potential Republican running mate for John McCain. How about Mark Rich defense lawyer Scotter Libby, himself the beneficiary of a sentance commutation by President Bush. Yes, thats the ticket! McCain-Libby in 2008.

Your Honor,
Here are a few more;
Hillary and Bill (We’ve had Bill and Hillary)
Hillary and her village. Nah, that would be too much
Hillary and George Soros, Caman Island business man and Democrat finance man.
Hillary and the super election committee.
(Can someone tell what is democratic about a back room dark society who can abrogate the one man one vote process.)
Barach and Jesse Jackson (another crook)
I bet you and I could carry this on until the election.
Corruption is part of the political process regardless of the parties. Howie Carr makes a living at uncovering it in Massachusetts, the bluest of blue states.
Teacherlady I have Plan C:
We vote for McCain and then we join the political action group that saturated the white house and congress with e-mails, phone calls and FAXes until the Amnesty bill was squashed, and again when they tried to pass the same bill under a new name
I was part of that action that had an popular effect. If he should win the Presidency we hit him aside the head with our protest when he drifts too far to the left.
Worked before.
Great fun here ladies and gentlemen.

I’m glad that Mitt’s out and I hope he never returns. He’s noting but an empty suit. He was a bad Gov and would be an even worse Prez. Many poeple are shocked that Mitt’s campaign didn’t take off. After all, he’s well spoken, squeaky-clean and looks like money. Doesn’t everyone want to be like that? But another candidate said it best. People want to vote for someone who reminds them of their friend at work, not the guy who laid them off. Mitt is CEO to the core. He’s Gordon Gecko from the movie Wall Street. He should stay in the business world where he belongs. Best wishes to the man who still believes that “Greed is good.” And if he does decide to run in 2012, here’s some advice for Mitt. If you want to connect to common folks, never use “summer” as a verb.
