McCain Wins NH (Again)

With 70% reporting Senator John McCain has done what was considered unlikely a few short weeks ago. He has revived his candidacy with a big win in NH, eclipsing Mitt Romney in a race that poll wise Romney has led for months. McCain thus far has received 37%, Romney 32%, Huckabee 11%, Rudy Guiliani at 9%, Ron Paul at 8%, and Fred Thompson at 1%. McCain is now positioned to do battle with Romney in Michigan and South Carolina, and this race is once again been turned inside out. As I mentioned in my posting on the Huckabee win in Iowa, McCain was a big beneficiary of the Iowa result, which slowed the Romney momentum and put a monkey wrench into the Mittsters well laid out plans for an early knockout punch. Looks like Mitt will be spending a little bit more of the family money to stay in the race.

I’m really getting sick of these Ron Paul revolutionaries and their invasion of the internet. Their candidate came in fifth in Iowa and fifth in New Hampshire…it doesn’t appear that he’s going to go anywhere.

Now that I got that out of my system, here are my predictions for the upcoming GOP primaries:

MI — Romney will get his long-awaited “gold medal” here. He is currently first in the polls, even after his losses in Iowa and NH. His father served as governor, and he has deep roots in the state. McCain shouldn’t be counted out, but the biggest reason why he won MI in 2000 was because it was open to Independents. In 2008, Michigan is a closed GOP primary. This will certainly give Romney the edge he needs. Also, watch out for Huckabee to finish a very respectable third.

NV — I haven’t seen any recent polling data, so it’s hard to get a feel for this one. Romney won Wyoming, and his Mormon base in the West may give him another gold. However, McCain is from Arizona. Huckabee and Giuliani were also strong according to the last poll taken a few weeks back. NV will certainly be a wide open race.

SC — The winner in SC will either be Huckabee or Thompson. Either McCain or Romney will finish third, depending on who carries Michigan. Watch for Thompson to drop out if he loses here.

FL — It seems as if Giuliani has moved from New York City to Florida. This primary is his to lose. Huckabee will likely do well in the Panhandle, and McCain / Romney will be strong there as well. If Thompson pulls off a win in SC, it could turn this one upside down.

My main point here…the GOP race will be decided at the August convention. I still believe that Romney will be the nominee. If he can manage to finish a respectable second in every contest (and someone different finishes first every time), he may be able to outlast the rest. HOWEVER…the distribution of GOP delegates is not proportional, so Romney still needs to win every state he possibly can. While no candidate in the GOP field should be counted out (with the exception of Paul and Hunter), I have a feeling that Romney still has the edge.

I just found out that the Nevada GOP caucus in nonbinding, and Romney/Paul are the only candidates who are participating. Scratch my prior prediction.

I watched your inaugural address yesterday on MCTV. It was great, and I wish you the best of luck in your new term. Please let me know if you need anything. I know that it’ll be incredibly tough for you to forgive me, but I would like to work with you. I’ve learned tremendously from my mistakes, and received an excellent lesson in honesty. I broke my own “Golden Rule” … Treat others as you would like to be treated.

    Best,
