The John McCain campaign announced yesterday that they were laying off scores of staffers as fundraising has been abysmal. McCain, down to two million dollars on hand, reportedly laid off between 50 and 80 staffers, including half of his Iowa staff. In Iowa McCain’s state director was amongst those leaving. Although the financial handwriting has been apparent for some time it is still a stunning development, fueling rumors that McCain will soon leave the race. With the deep and rancorous divide in the Republican Party is is apparent that Republican donors have been voting with their wallets. McCain has been seriously hurt by the immigration bill position he took, as well as lingering resentment amongst some over past positions. These include initial opposition to the Bush tax cuts and the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Law. McCain has been trying for some time to appease the right and make amends with the Bush folks, but as he is learning there is no such thing as being half-pregnant. Either you are in or you are out, and McCain tried to be both. I think McCain is forced to withdraw after New Hampshire. He is in for a severe shellacking in Iowa. If you are handicapping Mitt looks a little better today, and I believe should be the “betting” favorite for the Republicans. Read the New York Times article on McCain’s financial woes at this link.

    Your Honor,

Had a hard time figuring out who he was politically. Hard to support an enigma.

Feel the same about Romney. Should have the credentials, but lacked strong leadership. Talked big but did not follow up. When he left the state to run for president, he became just like all the Republicrats before him, from Weld (got tired of the job) to “Not SO Swift”. None built the party in the state.

I hope Torkildsen can do the job. He seems to be starting all over from the grass (weed?) roots.

    How’s you 4th.

Fourth is great but I have a small complaint. At the municipal Fourth of July celebration people kept coming up to me and saying, “heh love the blog, and we love that Jules Gordon.” I began to worry about a Jules for Mayor campaign based on throwing out scallywags like myself! Hope you’re not thinking about it.

    Your Honor,

You need not worry. I could, however, become part of your re-election team. I could paint your signs. “Scallywag For Mayor”. Nah, I will support your Republican opponent instead. As soon as I find out who he or she is. Maybe Republicans are becoming extinct. I’d better call the Sierra Club.

Actually, you’re doing a fine job. But, I will keep an eye on you.

Nice to know people are enjoying our te-ta-te.

This simply solidifies the Mittstah as the GOP nominee in 2008. By the way…wasn’t Fred Thompson supposed to announce his candidacy today? Maybe he’s reconsidering? Who knows.

I am not surprised at McCain’s troubles (and will not be surprised when he ultimately withdraws).

In the past, he stood out from the crowd because he did not take a traditional stance on issues. Well, this time his stance (the immigration bill) hurt him. With so many others in the race, it’s no surprise that he may not recover from that one.

The teacher lady has it right. Immigration has killed him amongst republicans. The donor base is starving his campaign, and it is the begining of the end.
