Campaign Kickoff

Last night I formally declared my candidacy for re-election as Mayor of Methuen. My thanks to Senator Steve Baddour, Representative Linda Dean Campbell, and City Council President Steve Zanni for their kind words of support. I will say more about our accomplishments in a future post, but for now I can say that I am proud of our record. I am able to announce that I have signed a contract for delivery of a new-prefab building to our Arlington Neighborhhod Group. This building will enable us to serve the children of our neighborhood in a more complete fashion, focusing on our homework center and all of the other vital services provided by M.A.N. Inc to our kids. This building project would not have been possible without Senator Baddour, Representative Campbell, and Representative L’Italien. It was a major plank in my run for Mayor in the last cycle, and we have fulfilled that promise. The building will be delivered on August 15th.

    Your Honor,

A reduction in real estate taxes will get my vote. Our new Governor is now working out ways reduce my taxes. I guess if you let the restaurants collect a city tax on top of the state tax, you will lower the real estate taxes so there is a zero sum tax balance.

Is the Brooklyn Bridge still for sale? (conservative humor).

    Jules,
I will post some Methuen numbers dealing with the Governor’s tax proposals shortly. The Restaurant tax is part of the package, but as I have said previously I would be reluctant to impose a local option tax on restaurants in Methuen. I do believe however that such an option should be available to municipalities and support the governors package as written. Since I balanced the budget this year by utilizing one million dollars in reserves any increase in revenue would likely be used to cover that shortfall. Since Methuen would not likely benefit from the sale of the Brooklyn Bridge I would point you to the new bridge being built in downtown Methuen by the Commonwealth. Maybe we could entice some “buyers” there!
