On behalf of the City of Methuen I would like to extend our best wishes and prayers to Senator Edward Kennedy and his family. Senator Kennedy has been a true giant in the Senate, and I know that in spite of the fact that he is a Senator with national stature he has never forgotten some of the smaller issues that have helped this state progress. He is truly a great Senator, and a real master of the nuts and bolts of government. The political folks know that he is without a doubt the go-to guy in Washington for Massachusetts. He has delivered again and again for our State. We are pulling for him, and his personality is that of a strong fighter. We know he will prevail.

I am pleased that you have taken the time to bring to the attention of the community our abiding gratitude to Senator Edward M Kennedy.
Methuen has a unique place in his heart for a number of reasons. He could always be relied upon to push for Methuen projects during my tenure as Town Manager working with Speaker O’Neill to secure funds for Park Gardens and two other senior housing projects, the renovation of Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation facility, a new sewer and water distribution system and so much more for Methuen.
On a personal note the Senator’s beautiful and brilliant wife Vicki has relatives right here in Methuen. Her Mother is a Bistany and she has many cousins in our Lebanese community.
I recall being at the Compound one early summer day when we were going through the receiving line. When I approached teh Senator he suprised me by asking if we still had the Lebanese festival during Labor Day. He told me of Vicki’s heritage and asked me to organize a reception for her which I was honored to do. On the day of the festival all the Bistany family and was there first in line to welcome their cousin to Methuen.
Senator Kennedy is important in so many ways. He is a fighter for us and we must pray that he will win this uphill fight.

Thank you for taking the time to bring those wonderful recollections of the Senator and his lovely wife. I had the pleasure to host the Senator and his wife and his beloved dogs on a visit to Park Garden just before he went in for the surgery to correct his blockage. As you know he is a dynamic speaker who has inspired people all over this country. I still remember, with some sadness but much pride, his speech at the 1980 convention. “The dream shall never die!!!!”
