Democrat Niki Tsongas won the Fifth Congessional seat in a relatively tight election last night, defeating Republican Jim Ogonowski by 51% to 45%. Tsongas won the race by winning the urban areas (Lawrence, Lowell, Haverhill) and racking up good margins in the southern end of the District. Tsongas joins an (formerly) all male, all Democratic Massachusetts Congressional delegation. Her swearing in will be in the next day or so, as Secretary of State Bill Galvin certifies the election results and coordinates with Washington. She should be in office in time to vote on the prospective override of the Bush veto of SCHIP. Follow the below link for city by city results in this race. I will post Methuen’s precinct by precinct results in the next day. Congratulations Niki Tsongas.
