War with Iran?

With Joe Lieberman calling for airstrikes against Iranian nuclear targets and the U.S. military accusing the Iranians of arming the Taliban the threat of a hot war with Iran seems to be rising. Pat Buchanan has written a column with his assesment of the situation, including some choice comments from Lieberman.

“If there’s any hope of … stopping their nuclear weapons development,” Lieberman said, “we can’t just talk to them.”

Buchanan speculates that the verbal bellicosity is advance justification for the strikes to come.

“What is going on? The most logical explanation is that the White House is providing advance justification for air strikes on camps of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard that are allegedly providing training for and transferring weapons to Afghan and Iraqi insurgents.”

Further speculation by Buchanan that after an Iranian military response to such strikes the President will escalate.

President Bush will then have his casus belli to take out Natanz and all the other Iranian nuclear facilities, as the Israelis and the neocons have been demanding that he do.

While Buchanan has been a consistent opponent from the right of the Iraq war he has been sounding the alarm on the Iranian situation for months. It is a fact that the Bush Middle Eastern policy has strengthened the Iranians politically. Their proxies are now in Gaza, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and Iraq, with traditional U.S. allies on the defensive. Is this what Condi Rice meant when she talked of the “new Middle East”? So ridiculous. We should stop prematurely invading these countries. They are not our friends, but there is no need to risk the lives of our young service men and women (some of whom just graduated from MHS with me). After this Iraq War fiasco, I will never trust President Bush with matters like this ever again. I’m 100% in support of our troops, but these reckless wars need to stop. Mr. President, think about the consequences before you act.

Glad to see you coming around DJ as I recall you had previously been a supporter of Shrub. Unfortunately, we have another 1-1/2 years to live with his reckless, dangerous ‘pre-emptive’ foreign policy. I guarantee you that just as they found a way to do Iraq (read WMD’s, state supporter of terrorism, et al), they’ll create another ‘Gulf of Tonkin’ event which will allow the neocons to march to war with Iran. Again, the innocent blood of our brave troops will be the only ‘pain’ the neocons suffer, while they continue to enrich themselves at the corporate till. God help us if China tries to exercise their military muscle while we’re wrapped up in this/these quagmires — then you and your young recent MHS graduate friends face the all too real prospect of a draft…

That’s what I’m worried about. This is a little off-the-subject, but I watched the movie “Bobby” last night and I was left wondering what the world would be like today if he hadn’t been shot and was elected President. What we need today is another R.F.K.

hmmm…..why does this make me oh so suspicious? Oh wait, wasn’t Iraq supporting Al Qaeda one of the excuses for invasion?

“Iran is using the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah as a “proxy” to arm Shiite militants in Iraq and Tehran’s Quds force had prior knowledge of a January attack in Karbala in which five Americans died, a U.S. general said Monday.”
